Over Chimes at Midnight (1965, ENG subs)
For some, this is the best Shakespeare film-adaptation. As Henry IV seizes over the English throne, it starts the factious War of the Roses and a rebellion led by Northumberland scion Hotspur. Henry’s heir, Prince Hal, is a rascal who drinks and causes mischief with his low-class friends, especially John Falstaff, who he sees as a father. To redeem his title, Hal must choose his loyalty between his biological father King Henry VII or Falstaff. Directed by George Orson Welles (1915 – 1985), the American film and theatre director, with an extensive filmography. Welles is known for his dramatic productions and his unique voice. He is considered as one of the most accomplished drama artists of the twentieth century. Some of his other known works are Citizen Kane (1941) and The Trial (1962). Throughout his life, Orson Welles was fascinated by Shakespeare, studying, editing the texts, directing them and performing them on the stage and in cinema. His third and final Shakespeare film, Chimes at Midnight, was the completion of a childhood-project. The film is shot in the haunting snow and mud of the Spanish winter landscapes. With a beautiful medieval atmosphere, in which Welles himself dominates the film as John Falstaff, a sly, self-loathing, dishonest man in search of truths in a corrupt world of power and brutal ambition. Initially disliked by most critics, Chimes at Midnight is now regarded as one of Welles's best work. It won the 20th Anniversary Prize and the Technical Grand Prize at 1966 Cannes Film Festival.

Kriterion is een onafhankelijke bioscoop en café aan de Roetersstraat, opgericht in 1945 en sindsdien gerund door studenten. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog begonnen door voormalig verzetsstudenten, heeft de plek haar zelfstandige karakter door de decennia behouden.
