Over Times Square (1980)
Someday a real rain will come and wash all the scum off the streets. Careful what you wish for! Two teenage girls, Pamela (Trini Alvarado) and Nicky (Robin Johnson), escape from a hospital and go on the run in a pre-gentrified New York City. Pamela is thirteen, a politician's daughter, crazy rich, and still completely innocent. Robin is sixteen and far more streetwise and sharp. Despite their differences, the two girls become friends. The girls go on crazy adventures, like squatting an abandoned building, throwing stuff off rooftops, and running around Times Square years before it was cleaned up, seemingly harmless. Before the hypergentrified New York City, the old, unsanitized Times Square was a playground of sleaze, drama, and sin of a city at its most extreme. It’s no wonder that it served as a cinematic muse, providing the vivid backround for tales of weirdos, outcasts, and lost souls navigating life in the urban jungle. Over Kriterion
Kriterion is een onafhankelijke bioscoop en café aan de Roetersstraat, opgericht in 1945 en sindsdien gerund door studenten. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog begonnen door voormalig verzetsstudenten, heeft de plek haar zelfstandige karakter door de decennia behouden. Het programma combineert actuele speelfilms met klassiekers, retrospectives en thematische series. Het café is ook buiten filmtijden open en vormt een ontmoetingsplek voor buurtbewoners en studenten. De studentencoöperatie die Kriterion beheert, maakt de plek organisatorisch afwijkend van commerciële bioscoopketens.
