Over The Virgin Suicides (1999)
There are times when mystery and beauty find you, and touch you, haunt you; moments you never forget, questions you never answer… In the beloved directional debut of Sofia Coppola, tragedy strikes the seemingly normal suburbs of 1970's Michigan. A group of teenage boys, our narrators, become entranced with the mysterious Lisbon sisters; Cecelia, Lux, Bonnie, Mary, and Therese, who live an isolated life forced unto them by their strict Catholic parents. In their romantized image of the sisters and through the eyes of the girls, we see the aftermath of teenage dreams turned bad, the emptiness and reality of girlhood unfulfilled. In a dream-like spell, the film follows the sisters lives, almost mystical as they are objectified by the narrator's gaze. Based on the book The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides, in her directional debut, Sofia Coppola offers a female perspective on what's it like to be a teenage girl. The Film has won several awards and was nominated for the Caméra d'Or at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. With an incredible soundtrack composed by the French band Air.

Over Kriterion
Kriterion is een onafhankelijke bioscoop en café aan de Roetersstraat, opgericht in 1945 en sindsdien gerund door studenten. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog begonnen door voormalig verzetsstudenten, heeft de plek haar zelfstandige karakter door de decennia behouden. Het programma combineert actuele speelfilms met klassiekers, retrospectives en thematische series. Het café is ook buiten filmtijden open en vormt een ontmoetingsplek voor buurtbewoners en studenten. De studentencoöperatie die Kriterion beheert, maakt de plek organisatorisch afwijkend van commerciële bioscoopketens.
