Over The President’s Cake (ENG SUBS)
Iraq, 1990. Nine-year-old Lamia is hunting the streets for butter, milk, and other basic ingredients for a birthday cake. Not for herself, but for her country’s ruler, Saddam Hussein. While the country suffers from food shortages caused by the war, he demands that every school in the country bake a cake to celebrate his birthday. Lamia travels from the countryside to the city in the hopes of showing up at school the next day with a cake in hand. The President’s Cake is the film debut of Iraqi director Hasan Hadi, based on his own childhood memories. Remarkably, Hadi worked exclusively with non-professional actors, including the exceptional Baneen Ahmad Nayyef in the lead role. The film never explicitly mentions the war. Instead, we view the events through the innocent eyes of young Lamia. Hadi does, however, manage to convey the political instability through subtle references, and uses a simple birthday cake to raise an unfathomable social issue.

Over Studio/K
Studio/K is een bioscoop, café en restaurant in Amsterdam Oost. Zo’n vijftig enthousiaste studenten steken dagelijks hun handen uit de mouwen om met z’n allen dit bedrijf te runnen. Studio/K is een non-profit culturele organisatie, opgericht in 2007 en is een initiatief van Stichting Kriterion. Alle studenten die bij Studio/K werken krijgen tijdens hun studietijd de unieke mogelijkheid om een eigen bedrijf te runnen waarbij ze veel verantwoordelijkheid krijgen en beslissingen maken over de bedrijfsvoering. Hierdoor kan iedereen zich ontwikkelen tot datgene wat niet in de studieboeken staat. Zo beginnen vele studenten in de horeca en groeien ze uiteindelijk uit tot bijvoorbeeld filmprogrammeur, grafisch vormgever of financieel penningmeester.
