Over The Lost Letter | Symbols of Ukraine
The Lost Letter is a musical tragicomedy from Kyiv’s Dovzhenko Film Studios, incorporating folklore and satire into a unique interpretation of Ukrainian history. The film is directed by Borys Ivchenko and based on a story by Nikolai Gogol, following two Cossacks, Vasyl and Andriy, on a treacherous journey to St. Petersburg to deliver a hramota (sealed official document), from their Hetman to the Russian Empress. Beginning as a simple mission, the story quickly spirals into a series of comical and mystical adventures during which they encounter supernatural forces and strange trials, transforming their quest into a fantastical odyssey. Although it is framed as an entertaining folk comedy, The Lost Letter carries a deeper cultural meaning and historical resonance, so much so that it was initially banned by Soviet censors as “ideologically incorrect” and only officially released in 1983.This film is part of our Symbols of Ukraine film festival.
Over Kriterion
Kriterion is een onafhankelijke bioscoop en café aan de Roetersstraat, opgericht in 1945 en sindsdien gerund door studenten. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog begonnen door voormalig verzetsstudenten, heeft de plek haar zelfstandige karakter door de decennia behouden. Het programma combineert actuele speelfilms met klassiekers, retrospectives en thematische series. Het café is ook buiten filmtijden open en vormt een ontmoetingsplek voor buurtbewoners en studenten. De studentencoöperatie die Kriterion beheert, maakt de plek organisatorisch afwijkend van commerciële bioscoopketens.
