Over The Eve of Ivan Kupala | Symbols of Ukraine
Set in a timeless rural Ukraine steeped in myth and superstition, The Eve of Ivan Kupalo is a folkloric story of love, desire, corruption and dark temptation, blending overwhelming surreal imagery with ritual and magical realism.The film is directed by Yuri Ilyenko and based on a novella by Nikolai Gogol, following the tale of Petro, a poor farmhand who longs to marry Pidorka, the daughter of a wealthy Cossack. When her father forbids their union, Petro turns in desperation to Basavriuk, a mysterious and devilish figure who is rumored to be the devil in human form.Around the pagan night of Ivan Kupala, when the boundaries between the natural and supernatural dissolve, Petro is lured into the forest in search of a mythical blooming fern said to grant riches and fulfill wishes... The Eve of Ivan Kupalo is a pillar of Ukrainian cinema and, in 2021, was included among the 100 greatest films in the history of Ukrainian film.This film is part of our Symbols of Ukraine film festival.
Over Kriterion
Kriterion is een onafhankelijke bioscoop en café aan de Roetersstraat, opgericht in 1945 en sindsdien gerund door studenten. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog begonnen door voormalig verzetsstudenten, heeft de plek haar zelfstandige karakter door de decennia behouden. Het programma combineert actuele speelfilms met klassiekers, retrospectives en thematische series. Het café is ook buiten filmtijden open en vormt een ontmoetingsplek voor buurtbewoners en studenten. De studentencoöperatie die Kriterion beheert, maakt de plek organisatorisch afwijkend van commerciële bioscoopketens.
