Over Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors | Symbols of Ukraine
Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is an emotionally charged tale of love and loss set in the Carpathian Mountains of 19th-century Ukraine. The film is rooted in the rich traditions of the Hutsul people, an East Slavic group spanning parts of western Ukraine and northern Romania, and follows Ivan, a young man who falls in love with Marichka, the daughter of the man who killed his father, binding their romance to a long-standing family blood feud. Similar to a timeless “Romeo and Juliet,” their love unfolds within a world shaped by forces beyond their control.Directed by Sergei Parajanov and based on the 1911 novel by Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, the film marked Parajanov’s breakthrough and brought him international acclaim. It is celebrated for its vibrant use of colour and elaborate costumes, as well as its innovative cinematography, blending folklore and avant-garde filmmaking into an ethereal and mythical experience. It has often been described as a cornerstone of Ukrainian magical realist cinema.After the screening, a talk will be had with Kateryna Pischikova from Celebrate UA and Ihor Sukhorukov from Nomadische Boekenplank, a Ukrainian led initiative that holds culture events to share the inspiration of Ukrainian culture in the Netherlands. The discussion will explore why supporting Ukrainian film and culture matters, examining the threats it faces, the history of its suppression, and the ways in which audiences and communities can actively contribute to its preservation. Broader themes will include the ongoing censorship of the Ukrainian language, the silencing of its stories, and the systematic erasure of its artistic traditions.This film is part of our Symbols of Ukraine film festival.
Over Kriterion
Kriterion is een onafhankelijke bioscoop en café aan de Roetersstraat, opgericht in 1945 en sindsdien gerund door studenten. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog begonnen door voormalig verzetsstudenten, heeft de plek haar zelfstandige karakter door de decennia behouden. Het programma combineert actuele speelfilms met klassiekers, retrospectives en thematische series. Het café is ook buiten filmtijden open en vormt een ontmoetingsplek voor buurtbewoners en studenten. De studentencoöperatie die Kriterion beheert, maakt de plek organisatorisch afwijkend van commerciële bioscoopketens.
