Over Mother of Flies
Mother of Flies by John Adams, Zelda Adams and Toby Poser. 2025, United States, 92 minutes, English. Winner of the Cheval Noir for Best Film at Fantasia 2025! Mickey is a young woman with a terminal diagnosis who isn't ready to die. With her father she goes into the woods to spend three days with Solveig, a reclusive witch who offers a cure. Every cure has its cost. A slow, hushed folk horror shot in the Catskills, with poetic voiceover, practical effects and a score by the makers' own band. The film grew out of the family's own experience of cancer. "A densely textured, quite gorgeous dive into folkloric witchiness." Dennis Harvey, Variety Toby Poser, John Adams and Zelda Adams make films together as the Adams Family, under the name Wonder Wheel Productions. They star in them, shoot, edit and score them too. Earlier features include The Deeper You Dig (2019), Hellbender (2021) and Where the Devil Roams (2023).
