Over Wayward Sanctuaries
Wayward Sanctuaries is a group exhibition in which artists explore new ways of creating a home. In a world full of change and uncertainty, they use art, rituals and spirituality to build their own spaces of connection, resistance and hope. The exhibition invites you to reflect on community, memory and the power of collectively imagining new worlds. The exhibition brings together work by fifteen emerging artists living and working in Belgium: Elise El Yousfi, Collyns Charts, Jonabel Huavas, Aya Koné, Eveline Bumba, Joseph Palframan, Luz E.L. Bran, Hsiao-Hsi Chen, Charbel Alkhoury, Jiyoung Chu, Aïcha Ouattara, Emily Walter, Thuy Lê Thi Thu, Kenny Mala Ngombe en Kadia Doumbouya. The exhibition is curated by Leana Boven. At a time when multiple crises are unfolding worldwide, the artists in Wayward Sanctuaries question what it truly means to create a home. A home isn't just a place you can escape to. It can also be a place where there is room for new and unconventional ideas and where forms of resistance can take root. The artists in Wayward Sanctuaries do not wait for existing systems to grant them a place. They build their own communities through ritual acts, spiritual thinking and 'rememory': the conscious retrieval of stories and memories that are often forgotten or repressed. In this way they try to give meaning, offer hope and create a sense of connection. The artists work within and against institutions or systems yet also bend them to their will. They appropriate these spaces as sites of collective spirituality and sanctuaries for magic and imagination. The exhibition also explores the larger cycles of life: death and rebirth, presence and absence, collapse and recovery. It invites you to view change, evolution and growth in a new light. What possibilities exist for carving out spaces where we can come together to rest, nurture, strategize, and dream? How can social life be reorganized so that hearts and spirits might be more closely aligned? In a time of multiple planetary crises, the 15 artists in 'Wayward Sanctuaries' ask what it means to make a home—not as refuge or escape, but as a reorientation toward gathering unruly, deviant propositions and ruptures. Rather than waiting for existing structures to hold them, they construct their own habitats through ritual, magical thinking, and rememory. Working within and against established systems, they subvert their functions and reclaim them as 'sanctuaries' for collective care, spirituality, and imagination. The exhibition moves toward transcendence not as abstraction, but as heightened awareness of cycles: death and rebirth, presence and absence, collapse and regeneration. Visitors are invited into an ongoing process of unlearning hierarchies and systems of control rooted in modern and colonial Western thought. Like plants without fixed ground, the artists explore adaptive, relational, earth-bound forms of belonging. A home is enacted as a continuous practice of making space for what is visible and what remains just beyond sight.
Over De Brakke Grond
De Brakke Grond is een Vlaams cultuurhuis in de Nes in Amsterdam, opgericht in 1981 en gefinancierd door de Vlaamse overheid. De organisatie presenteert actuele Vlaamse kunst aan een Nederlands publiek en fungeert als netwerk- en kennisplatform voor makers die de grens over willen. Het programma omvat podiumkunsten, beeldende kunst en muziek, met een duidelijk accent op dans, theater en performance. Gezelschappen als NTGent, CAMPO en Voetvolk staan er regelmatig, naast festivals als FIBER. Naast presenteren biedt de Brakke Grond ook residenties en begeleiding aan Vlaamse makers die zich in Nederland willen ontwikkelen.
